Why I’m Running

Promises Made. Promises Kept.

In 2022, I came to you with a clear agenda for The North District

Make Uptown an equal priority.
Done — and we're just getting started. Since taking office, we have more large-scale projects pending and approved than at any point in recent memory:

  • New Fire Stations

  • Endview Housing Development

  • Sherwood Shopping Center Re-development

  • I-64 interchange at Denbigh Bridge

These aren't promises anymore — they're shovels in the ground. Uptown is finally getting what it has always deserved.

Replace Grissom Library with a state-of-the-art facility.
Done — The $40 million, 51,000+ square foot Virgil L. Grissom Library — a world-class community resource for the Denbigh area — is now officially underway. This is what delivered promises look like.

Rebrand Newport News to compete regionally, state-wide, and nationally.
Done — The foundation is laid. We completely revamped our Communications department because one thing is clear — if we don't tell Newport News's story, no one else will. We've also gotten serious about the tourism market, actively pursuing outside dollars and putting Newport News on the map as a destination city. The city you see today is not the city of four years ago.

Empower the next generation of leaders.
Done — This was never just about “age”— it's about getting the right people engaged in local government. Our campaign proved that Newport News has extraordinary talent waiting to be activated. We've seen residents step up, get involved, and invest in this city in ways we have not seen before. That energy is real, and we're committed to channeling it into the future of Newport News.

Meet Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany

I've spent most of my life in the northern part of our city — Uptown. This district isn't just where I live; it's where I became who I am.

I attended and graduated from grade school here. I held my first job here, as a custodian for AAFES. I purchased my first home here, in Courthouse. I met and married my wife here, on Fort Eustis. And over the years, I've built lifelong bonds with the neighbors and residents who call our district home.
